Energy Retrofitting at Scale
A technological solution to a long-standing energy problem
It’s a sobering statistic that electricity consumption in the United States is projected to increase by 27% from 2022 levels, reaching approximately 5,178 TWh by 2050. This dramatic rise in demand will place immense strain on an energy infrastructure that’s already struggling to meet current needs as it is.
There are 2 ways to deal with this challenge: build additional capacity or reduce energy demand.
The traditional approach of expanding capacity involves substantial investment, extended timelines, and major environmental considerations. Reducing energy demand, however, offers a more immediate, cost-effective, and sustainable answer.
Performance Energy has developed a tested, technology-based solution to reduce energy consumption nationwide.
Reducing energy demand through retrofitting
Energy retrofitting—upgrading existing buildings to improve their energy efficiency—is a central strategy for reducing electricity consumption and its associated environmental impact. It involves improving building insulation, upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and sealing air leaks. As part of a demand reduction strategy, retrofitting offers a compelling financial alternative to building new energy infrastructure. For example, constructing a 1,000 MW nuclear power plant costs approximately $7.5 billion, and will serve about 750,000 homes. This works out to about $10,000 per household. In contrast, retrofitting a household costs an average of $5,000 and delivers immediate energy savings of 15-30%. A typical 25% reduction in energy use translates to approximately 2,662 kWh saved annually per household, equating to $400-$500 in reduced energy bills.
Retrofitting vs. renewables
While renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are essential to creating a sustainable energy future, retrofitting offers a more immediate impact in terms of reducing energy consumption and costs. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) from wind and solar power typically ranges from $30 to $45 per MWh. Renewable energy infrastructure, however, requires extended timelines, with projects taking anywhere from three to 19 years to develop. Retrofitting, by comparison, can be completed in just a few weeks, providing near-immediate reductions in energy demand.
Historic Barriers to Retrofitting
While energy retrofitting may offer a highly effective way to reduce electricity demand, widespread adoption of the strategy has faced significant barriers. These barriers include: ,

High cost
Retrofitting has often been viewed as expensive due to the labor-intensive nature of energy audits and the need for specialised equipment.

Skilled labor shortage
There has been a notable shortage of trained professionals in the energy efficiency sector, limiting the number of retrofitting projects that can be undertaken. Energy efficiency jobs have consistently ranked as some of the hardest to fill in the clean energy sector.

Non-standardized processes
The lack of standardized methods for retrofitting has resulted in inconsistent results, inefficiencies, and challenges in monitoring and verifying retrofit performance. Fortunately, Performance Energy has developed the technologies and procedures needed to address these barriers.
The Performance Energy Solution
With over 20 years of expertise in building technology, Performance Energy has developed an innovative suite of tools designed to streamline the retrofitting process, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. ,

Retrofitter BackPack™
This wearable device is equipped with over 10 sensors and cameras, including thermal, infrared, optical, and spatial imaging. The BackPack collects precise data about a building’s energy inefficiencies, such as insulation gaps and air leaks. This data is used to provide accurate, actionable recommendations tailored to each individual structure.

Retrofitter Lenses™
The Lenses are specialized headsets with thermal and optical cameras that allow technicians to identify energy inefficiencies in real time. The headsets can detect issues such as duct leaks and insulation problems during inspections, enabling faster, more accurate assessments and reducing the likelihood of errors

Retrofitter App™
The Retrofitter App centralizes data collection, analysis, and reporting, simplifying the energy audit process. The app’s user-friendly interface allows even less experienced technicians to conduct high-quality energy assessments, dramatically increasing the scalability of retrofitting projects.

Improve the energy efficiency of your home with Performance Energy ,

Real-world validation of our technology
More than just being experimental prototypes, Performance Energy’s retrofitting technologies have been rigorously tested in real-world environments. A pilot program in Georgia successfully retrofitted 6,000 homes over two years, achieving an impressive peak rate of 35 homes retrofitted per day.
This program delivered average energy savings of 25% per household. With Performance Energy’s technologies reducing retrofitting costs from $3.75 per square foot to $2.50 per square foot, these results clearly demonstrate the scalability and effectiveness of the Retrofitter suite.
Energy retrofitting training centers
To meet the growing demand for retrofitting technicians, Performance Energy has established modular training centers that can be deployed quickly and easily nationwide. These centers provide:

Hands-on curriculum
Technicians receive in-depth training on how to use the Retrofitter suite of tools, ensuring consistent quality and efficiency across all potential retrofitting projects.

Inclusive access
The training programs cater to individuals from diverse educational and professional backgrounds, making them more accessible to a wider range of potential candidates.

Efficient scalability
Our centers are designed to scale with the growing need for skilled labor, helping to meet the demand for retrofitting professionals nationwide.
With the Georgia pilot program validating the effectiveness of the retrofitter system, and our modular training programs serving as the basis for nationwide scalability of the technology, Performance Energy is bringing high-volume, cost-effective retrofitting to the nationwide energy use equation.
